AFP/Getty Images The 2018 Nissan Leaf Electric Car is seen at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show,.Nissan Motor Co. said it would start testing robotaxis on Japanese streets in March. The Japanese car maker said in January it was teaming up with Japanese technology company DeNA Co. 2432, -1.76% to build a fleet of self-driving vehicles. With Tuesday’s announcement, the company has laid out its first concrete plan to get those vehicles on the road. Initially, Nissan will put two Leaf electric cars, equipped with an array of cameras and sensors, on the road in Yokohama, near its headquarters. The vehicles will have a safety driver in the front seat and a call center will monitor the vehicle’s location. Members of the public can apply to be part of the initial field tests. Nissan 7201, +0.00% hopes to have a fleet of self-driving Leafs on Japanese roads by the early 2020s, as part of a robotaxi service it is calling Easy Ride.
